Black  people  are  offered  the  oldest  and  the  worst  council  homes  in London,  while  whites  get  favourable’treatment  for  their  housing  applications.

This  indictment  comes  from  a  Greater  London  Council  housing  management  committee  report  out  yesterday.

Recommending  that  a  monitoring  service  to  be  set  up  to  check  that  blacks  get  treated  fairly,  the  report  states  that  there  are  no  grounds  for  believing  there  is  race  bias  against  black  housing  ap­plicants.

But  blacks  do  get  the  worst  housing  and  report  believes  this  is  because  blacks  accept  the  first  home  offered,  are  more  often  home­less  and  want  to  stay  in  Inner  London.

In  Glasgow  yesterday,  a  working  party  on  young,  single  home­less  said  the  ргоЫещ  was  “frightening”,  putting  the  primary  respon­sibility  on  the  local  housing  authority.
