(abridged) A  few  hundreds  yards  away  from  Buckingham  Palace,    at  the  bottom  of  the  Duke  of  York  steps  down  among  the  cream-coloured  pillars  of  the  Mali’s  Regency  terraces,    is,  maybe,  the  last  place  you’d  expect  to  find  people  celebrating  the  50th  anniversary  of  the  General  Strike.

A NEW EXPERIENCE

At  the  foot  of  the  hill  I  took  the  red  tram  to  Central  Station,  and  at  the  Left  Luggage  Office  checked  in  my  hamper.  Then  I  went  into  the  Railway  Buffet  and  fortified  myself  hurriedly  with  a  cold  sausage  roll  and  a  glass  of  beer.  I  was  beginning  to  have  qualms  about  the  evening,  and  […]

IN 1944

That  was  how  the  days  passed  in London,  in  the  winter  of  19». “О,  my  offence  is  rank”  the  King  said,  when  Polonius  had  gone,  “it  smells  to  heaven It  hath  the  primal  eldest  curse  upon  ’t,
